The Credit Unions of Jamaica donated over 100 tablets to the tune of JMD$2.3 million (USD 16,500) to schools, other educational institutions, and needy children since the start of virtual learning. It did so on behalf of its 25 member-credit unions, across Jamaica.
Beneficiaries include the Women’s Centre Foundation which received 42 tablets for adolescent mothers who attend the Woman’s Crisis Centre; the Best Care Foundation for mentally challenged children, which accepted a donation of 10 tablets and the Pratville Primary School in Manchester, which received 40. While other donations were received by individual students whose parents were unable to provide them with vital electronic devices.
The Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League (JCCUL, a co-operative central body embracing all the Credit Unions in the island, was conceptualized in July 1942 at the 2nd Convention of Credit Unions calling for the formation of a League. JCCUL’s constitution was adopted on February 22, 1943 and five (5) Credit Unions were registered as members.
